Why Manual LC Discrepancy Review Misses 2 in 3 Errors

An LC Scrutinizer reviews around 15 document presentations a day - barely 30 minutes each. Each file includes the SWIFT credit message, every amendment, commercial invoice, bill of lading, and a dozen supporting documents that must all agree with each other and with the LC terms.

In live tests with experienced staff at a large international trade bank, their own experts caught just 36% of hidden discrepancies. ComplyTrade AI caught 97% on the same presentations, independently verified by their trade team. That means two in three discrepancies go unseen on a manual pass.

Why skilled examiners still miss discrepancies

The gap is not carelessness - it is the nature of high-volume repetitive work.

  • Cross-document mismatches. A discrepancy rarely sits inside one document. It appears when the invoice goods description differs slightly from the bill of lading, or a date falls outside a window set by an amendment elsewhere.
  • Amendments change the baseline. An LC with three amendments is no longer the original LC. Applying each change in order, then testing every document against the result, is where fatigue creeps in.
  • The clock does not stop. UCP 600 allows five banking days to decide compliance. Volumes do not slow down to accommodate that window.
  • Fatigue is not a character flaw. Checking the same clause for the ninth time in a shift is not where human attention performs best. Software applies the same rigor to the last file as the first.

What a missed discrepancy costs

  • Risk: An undetected discrepancy is a compliance exposure inside a file the bank has already signed off on.
  • Revenue: Every discrepancy caught is a potential Refusal Advice – and each brings revenue with its risk reduction. A desk catching only a third leaves the rest uncollected.
  • Speed: Faster turnaround is something relationship managers can sell. A desk working by eye will consistently be slower.

Where AI fits

ComplyTrade does not replace the examiner. It reads SWIFT LC messages natively, applies amendments in order, and examines the full document set against all LC terms and UCP 600 practice, clause-by-clause, every time. A human still makes the final call.

What changes is the information that examiner decides on - a complete set of findings instead of a sample. The result: 2x transaction capacity without additional staff, and 3.5x productivity.
