Why Manual LC Discrepancy Review Misses 2 in 3 Errors
An LC examiner gets five banking days to check a presentation against the credit. Five days sounds generous until you count what sits on the desk: the SWIFT message, every amendment, the commercial invoice, the bill of lading, and a dozen supporting documents that all have to agree with each other and with the LC terms.
Now put a number on how that goes. In a controlled test with a client bank, the bank's own trade experts caught 36% of the discrepancies hidden in the paperwork. ComplyTrade caught 97%. Same documents, same LCs, verified independently by the bank's trade team.
That leaves roughly 64% of discrepancies unseen on a manual first pass. Nearly two in three.
What the test showed
The figures come from ComplyTrade white papers, collated in controlled testing with leading bank trade finance teams. Each bank's own trade team verified the results in a staged evaluation environment. They are measured results, not projections.
Across banks running ComplyTrade, AI surfaced 3.5x more discrepancies on average than manual review did. These were not new errors introduced by the software. They were already sitting in the documents, invisible to a manual first pass.
Why skilled examiners still miss discrepancies
The examiners in that test were not careless. They were experienced people doing a task that is hard for humans to do reliably at volume.
The document set is large and has to cross-check. A mismatch rarely shows up inside one document. It appears when the goods description on the invoice differs slightly from the bill of lading, or when a date on one document falls outside a window set by an amendment on another.
Amendments change the baseline. An LC with three amendments is no longer the LC that was first issued. Applying each change in the right order, then testing every document against the result, is exactly the kind of sequential bookkeeping where fatigue creeps in.
The clock does not stop. Under UCP 600, a bank has a maximum of five banking days following the day of presentation to decide whether the presentation complies. Volume does not slow down to match that window.
Fatigue is not a character flaw. Checking clause 14 of the same document type for the ninth time in a shift is not where human attention performs best. Software does not tire, and it applies the same rigor to the last file of the day as to the first.
What a missed discrepancy means for the bank
The first cost is risk. A discrepancy that goes undetected is a compliance exposure sitting inside a file the bank has already signed off on.
The second cost is quieter. Every discrepancy caught is a potential Refusal Advice, and each one brings revenue alongside the risk prevention. A desk that catches a third of what is there leaves the rest of that revenue uncollected.
The third is speed. Faster turnaround becomes something relationship managers can sell to corporate clients. A desk working through documents by eye cannot offer it.
Where AI fits, and where it does not
ComplyTrade does not replace the examiner. It reads SWIFT LC messages natively, applies amendments in the right order, and examines the full document set against LC terms and UCP 600 practice, clause by clause, every time. A human examiner still makes the final call on every file.
What changes is the information that examiner is deciding on. They review a complete set of findings instead of a sample, which frees them to spend time on judgment calls rather than repetition.
For banks, the practical effect is capacity. ComplyTrade delivers 2x transaction capacity without adding examiner staff, and a 3x reduction in the scrutiny expert staff needed per file.
How to test your own desk
The most persuasive evidence is your own. A staged evaluation uses your documents and your LCs, and your own trade team checks the results. That is how every figure in this article was produced. If a vendor will not let your team verify the numbers, treat the numbers accordingly.
ComplyTrade also runs entirely on-premises, inside the bank's own data center, so no trade document, SWIFT message, or client detail leaves your facility during the evaluation or after it.
